CPAP Cleaning Device Concerns
The FDA received 11 reports from patients who had breathing problems when ozone gas-based products were used to clean, sanitize or sterilize their CPAP devices. There have been no adverse event reports for UV light products that claim to clean, suck or kill.
The director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health said that exposure to high levels of ozone gas may increase the chance of a respiratory infection.
UV light-based products could cause burns, eye damage or increase the risk of skin cancer due to over exposure, Maisel noted. The FDA contacted manufacturers of products that made these claims and asked them to submit data demonstrating their safety and effectiveness.
FDA Tests CPAP Cleaners
The FDA conducted its own testing on the products. The testing showed that ozone generated above the safe levels for human exposure. After waiting for the manufacturer to give them a time to clean, ozone levels in the machines were high.
The FDA found that the power of the UV light and the time during which the CPAP masks and accessories were exposed to it varied considerably among UV cleaners. The FDA says that if the components are exposed to insufficient UV light or processed for an insufficient amount of time, they could be inadequately disinfected.
The FDA encourages people to report adverse events related to the use of CPAP cleaning devices.
